Namaste: a Hindu greeting
roughly translated as "Seeing the divine in you, knowing the
divine in me, we are one." (from the CD Namaste produced by
Real Music.)
Define spirituality? Spirit
in me. It IS
me. It's you... and you, and you, and you, and all the other you's out there in all
the realms of existence.
Religion is only a set of behaviors or actions we take (what we do) as a result of
our belief system and/or faith. Religion is limiting. Spirit is what we are.
Spirit is unlimited. Spirituality is the practice of being
who we are. The Connection.
Philosophy
comes from two Greek words and literally means "man's
wisdom". When we try to explain why things are the
way they are, we are practicing philosophy. This page about spirituality is really
just my philosophy of spirituality. It doesn't have a lot of meaning of its
own. Spiritual practice is a set of things we do in order to help us
really connect with who we are and bring about a clearer view of reality.
Reality isn't what we see, touch, smell, and hear. Reality is what's behind all
that.
Reality goes by a lot of names. God,
Buddha,
Allah, Divine Mother, Great Spirit,
Krishna, or the Tao are just a few names people have given it.
Nobody
really knows Its true nature. By that I mean nobody knows God exactly
in all of God's totality. Finite beings cannot know Infinite Spirit
without themselves becoming infinite. There's a lot of evidence of
that Power I call God, or Great Spirit, or Divine Universe, or Higher Power.
The evidence is sometimes seen in the transformation
of people and things when they have been touched by God in such a way that
nothing else will do, and they become true seekers of Reality.
All true religions, at their core,
say they are trying to improve the state of humankind. Maybe they
do, maybe they don't. I couldn't say. But I do think that Individually, we do
just that by
trying to improve ourselves. If everyone on this planet would just
improve a little bit, can you imaging how much better the world would
be? Even if only one improves, the world is
still a better place. If each of us practiced just a little more
tolerance, a little more peace, a little more love... what would this
place look like? Hmmmm......
One day I prayed that God would show me what faith to follow.
A question came to my mind that asked, "What
religion does God belong to?" I heard someone say that Christ was not a Christian, Mohammed was not a
Muslim, Buddha was not a Buddhist, and Krishna was not a Hindu.
God reveals
Him/Herself to each of us in many
different ways. So the God that I understand is not the God you
understand. Today I don't have to convince you that my God is the Only
God, or that my way is the Only Way (I don't believe that anyway). Sometimes God speaks to me through
you. I hope that continues.
If
I had a message that I'd like to share (and put into practice), it's that there is greater joy, serenity, and contentment in allowing
that Divinity within each of us to guide our actions, our thinking, and our
lives. "Thy will, not mine, be done." God Is, I Am, We Are... All One.
"Be still and know that I am God."
Cleanliness is not next to Godliness,
stillness is.
"The Tao that can be told is not the eternal Tao."
