Chenrezig

Tibetan Buddhist

Bodhisattva of Compassion

In Tibetan Buddhism, the Buddha of Compassion is Chenrezig, also called Avalokiteshvara in India.  It was Avalokiteshvara who gave us the Heart Sutra, and many other teachings.  An excellent place to learn more about Tibetan Buddhism and Chenrezig on the web is

Dharma Haven.

Another good place to learn about Tibetan Buddhism is found at the Osel Shen Phen Ling Tibetan Buddhist Center in Missoula, Montana.  There is a link from the picture at the right.

I also highly recommend any book by the Dalai Lama.  Chogyam Trungpa is also an excellent source.  He wrote a book titled "Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism" which contains instruction applicable to anyone's religious or spiritual practice.

When we practice out of fear of punishment, or desire for reward, these attachments prevent us from experiencing deeper truths of the teachings.  Also, we often study particular philosophies in order to show how smart we are about them.  Trungpa calls this spiritual materialism - not true spirituality.  Like having an antique store that's crammed full of valuable old relics, we can't enjoy or use them because the store is so junked up.

 Om Mani Padme Hum

Tibetan writing: Om Mani Padme Hum

The mantra, Om Mani Padme Hum bestows on us the blessings of Chenrezig, Avalokiteshvara, or Kwan Yin when chanted aloud or silently.  There is a link at the left, on the picture of the mantra written in Tibetan, to Dharma Haven's discussion about the mantra.

Om Mani Padme Hum

Thank you to Terry at Dharma Haven, and Bob Jacobson at Osel Shen Phen Ling, and especially to whoever created the digital prayer wheel in the first place.

The Tibetan Buddhist culture employs and evokes highly symbolic and meaningful Dharma (Teachings) Art.  The beauty of the artwork evokes a reverence all of its own.  If you're interested in the least, I urge you to explore on your own.  As with anything that we don't know much about...

"There is a principle which is a bar against all  information, which is proof against all arguments and which cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance - that principle is contempt prior to investigation."  Herbert Spencer
