Broken
Toys Broken Dreams
a
book by Terry Kellogg
|
 |
A
Customer came into the store a while back and looked around for a while, and
then asked me if I either had or knew where she could find a book called
"Broken Toys Broken Dreams." My customer didn't know the title
exactly or the author's name exactly, but there was enough for me to start
looking. I said that if they wanted to, they could do the search
themselves. I was told, "I'm not exactly computer literate, and I'd
rather you just find out where it is and how much if you don't mind," or
words to that effect. I was told that a friend had recommended it.
The book explained a lot of things that helped the friend get through some
tough times. So I said I'd look for it and call with what I found out. The
next day I sat down to do my search in all the usual places. E-bay,
Amazon.com, among others. It really seemed like this book was out of
print. It wasn't in the Hazelden catalog, and that surprised me,
considering the topic it covered. All I could find were used copies, or
new copies that cost an arm and a leg. I finally found one that looked
to be in good used condition, so I figured I'd order a copy for myself, and
then resell it when I was done. I
ordered the book and it came the following week. It was in really used
condition, but it wasn't torn up or anything. It looked like it was just
thoroughly used. I took it home and began to read it. At first it
seemed like it was a bit too in depth to interest the average person dealing
with these kind of problems -- a spouse's addiction and their own co-dependant
behaviors that they didn't understand. For about the first paragraph. I
began to see why this one book was so important to that particular customer at
that particular time. Actually, I began to see why this book could be so
important to anyone at any time. If you, or anyone you know, has been
affected by your own or anyone else's drinking, taking drugs, obsessive
behaviors including food and relationship problems, or over-indulgence in
activities such as sports (as a spectator or participant), or anything related
to that including co-dependence and/or enabling behaviors, get this
book. But only if you want to understand what's going on. If
you don't want to understand it, but only want recovery from it, that's okay
too. You can obtain a certain amount of recovery and become a
functioning adult in society without knowing all the details of the
problem. But often, as Terry suggests and explains in his book, recovery
from one addiction or behavior can lead to problems in others. And
if you think that it would be too complicated to understand, I disagree.
I've read some pretty dry stuff, and this is anything but dry. For the
retail price of $10.95 (pre-tax in Washington State), it's a pretty easy
read. Terry's style is personable and not condescending at all. He
doesn't mince words but he's not cruel either. What's
kind of funny is that I bought this book and loved it, and then decided to try
getting in touch with the publisher. I found out that the book is one of
several of Terry's works, which I hope to be carrying soon too. I've
talked to them in e-mail and on the phone. Maybe someday when I'm a
grown-up book-store, I'll sponsor a book signing with Terry. I'm sure it
would be a blast. I ordered several copies to keep on my shelf and to
sell on the internet. This is one that's going into my "must
read" list for recovery. When you finally get your own copy, you'll
understand my excitement. It's really really worth every penny! |

The
Sedona Method
|
 |
If
money was not an object, I would send all of my friends and relatives through
a minimum of the two-day Accelerated Sedona Method Seminar at the Sedona
Training Associates' headquarters in Sedona, Arizona. Maybe someday
money will not be an object, but then people wouldn't need the Sedona Method. On
September 6 and 7 of this year I attended a two-day Accelerated Sedona Method
Seminar. I was skeptical when I walked in. I was more than a
believer when I walked out. I was a promoter. And not just because
I might make a buck or two if you buy the book from our store. I
discovered what I had been looking for throughout my life. And I
discovered it was with me all the time. I'm
really struggling with a way to describe this experiences without rambling on
forever. The reason is that words are so inadequate to express reality
and truth. At best they are just fairly accurate pointers to
truth. Words are made up of letters which stand for sounds which, when
combined in certain ways, represent certain concepts. In fact, words
themselves are concepts. So when you combine words into sentences and
sentences into paragraphs and so on, you are already three or four conceptual
levels away from Truth. But even all that's just a bunch of gobbledygook
if there's no practical application. Just
what is the Sedona Method? What are the practical applications?
Very simply, it's a way to let go of negative or unwanted feelings, emotions,
thoughts, desires, and more. This allows you to experience lasting
peace, happiness, success, and emotional well-being (Directly off the cover of
the book - but it's true!) You're able to think more clearly and more
effectively. You become more and more effective with the Sedona Method
as you practice it regularly. It has helped people let go of emotional
pain they never thought possible. People have quit smoking and obtained
their ideal body weight using the Sedona Method. The
Sedona Method is not a replacement for properly educated and trained
psychologists, psychiatrists, and doctors. Those with severe
mental/emotional problems are advised to see the appropriate professional for
medical and/or mental/emotional diagnosis and treatment. In addition, if
there are problem with drug or alcohol addictions, one should seek competent
help from the medical, mental health, and chemical treatment professionals as
well as become involved in a 12 Step recovery program (the 12 Step
recommendation is mine). The Method is, however, strongly endorsed by
many professionals as an adjunct to medical regimens, and ties in perfectly
with any 12 Step recovery program one is involved in. (A separate
article will discuss how the Sedona Method works with a 12 Step program) Before
I go further, I want to give you a link to the Sedona Training Associates
website where you will learn more about it.
Now
I'll tell you about my experience at the seminar. Remember,
this is only MY experience and will likely not be the same for everyone who
attended with me. A
woman discovered a very painful emotional memory and using the Sedona Method
discovered that behind that pain was nothing there but love and peace. A
man used the method to unravel a "knot of pain"-ful feelings he'd
been carrying for 50 years. My
experience was not so dramatic. At least it wasn't visibly so.
I've been a seeker all of my life. And I did have some fear that this
would just be another one of those fads like EST was in the 70's.
Sometime during the first day of the seminar I realized that this was the
easiest thing in the world to do. It was almost like a revelation, but
there was no bright light or lightning bolts. No transcendental
experience and no Voice of God booming down from the sky. I just
happened to notice that I knew that this thing was the easiest thing in the
world to do, and that I'd been doing it all my life. Then there was
nothing but joy and peace. I mean, the people didn't go away or anything
like that, it's just that I was at rest. I didn't have to do anything or
know anything or prove anything. I was able to just BE. That may
not sound like much, but if you could talk to my wife she would say that was a
profound change for me. There were moments when I would just touch
complete bliss and know that all was well with the world. No, I was not
taking any drugs - I'm in a 12 Step program myself. I also know now why
I was there at that particular time in that particular place. One
of the really neat things we discovered is that we didn't need to delve into
the drama or tell "my story of why I'm so screwed up" or get wrapped
up in trying to understand "why" we feel a certain way. Hale
Dwoskin, the author of the book The Sedona Method, said at the seminar
"The only reason you need to understand why or how you got into a problem
is if you're intending to have that same problem again." Regardless
of what psychiatrists and people who study the psyche say, Hale is
right. I've experienced it directly. Feelings are not repressed,
to be regurgitated later. They are not expressed, to embarrass or
potentially harm one's self or others in the process. Instead, they are
noticed, welcomed, felt, and then let go of just like letting the wind blow
by. Or the same way a cloud blows across the sky. The sky doesn't
make any judgment about the cloud. It just lets it be. And the
clouds don't stick to the sky either. Feelings
are like the clouds and we are like the sky. We are not our
feelings. We can let them go as easily as dropping a pencil (in fact we
did that at the seminar). It's as simple as asking yourself if you would
let it go and then inviting yourself to do so. But don't take my word
for it. Get the book and try it. If you even do it half-heartedly
you will get benefit. Having
attended the Accelerated Sedona Method Seminar, I've opened to an entirely new
world. I've rambled enough about it and I could go on and on. So
I'll just close for now, and hope you'll all take advantage of it. We'll
be carrying the book The Sedona Method in the store and offering it on the
internet pretty soon. To reserve a copy, call the store at 206-244-9537
or send an e-mail to info@flatmajic.com.
You really will be glad you did. |

What
is it, anyway? Aura
healing isn't about healing cuts and scrapes, or curing other physical disease
or injury. It is about releasing the energy we
collect as we go through our day being cut off in traffic, having a
disagreement with a co-worker and things like that. We
all have an energy field that extends outward from our body in all
directions. Sometimes negative energy becomes attached and sometimes
there are energy blockages around our chakras.
Aura healing is the practice of clearing blockages and attachments so that we're
grounded and centered, giving us stronger energy, more clarity of thought and serenity of spirit. We
begin our aura healing by sitting on a chair comfortably with our feet flat on the floor,
our hands separated, palms up, on our lap, and our eyes closed. The aura
healer helps us ground and center ourselves. Now
that we are grounded and centered, the aura healer helps us begin to release.
We don't actually do anything other than answer the healer when we feel like
talking, or answering questions we're asked. We are releasing the tensions from the day when
our aura has been invaded by other people and situations. The original
intent earlier in the day may not have been to harm, but our aura was
affected, and we want to be clear again. Sometimes we get "into
someone else's space" and our aura is still carrying that around.
Sometimes it's the other way around. Aura Healing is all about
cleansing, releasing, returning to center, anchoring to ground. It's
like coming home. It's
a simple procedure, learned in about 5 classes of about 1 and a half to two
hours each. If you'd like to learn more about it, or would just like to
experience an aura healing, you can call us at the store, or call Maris at
Blue Crystal Massage. Blue Crystal Massage is located on
10th Avenue SW, on the edge of Olde Burien between 152nd and 151st
streets. The phone number is 206-431-2014. |
